CreaTech

Stimulating business and industry growth to support our region’s creative and immersive technologies.

The rise of CreaTech in the West Midlands

Creative Futures is the gateway between the University of Warwick and the Creative & Digital Sector across Coventry, Warwickshire and the broader West Midlands.

We leverage our partnerships with Leamington Spa’s Creative Cluster, the esports industry and regional stakeholders to deliver impact through a diverse range of services and programmes and our Esports Centre on the University campus.

The University of Warwick was also instrumental in the launch of CWX (Coventry and Warwickshire Exchange), an Innovate UK-funded cluster management organisation supporting the Coventry and Warwickshire Immersive and Creative Technologies Launchpad programme.

There’s a real alchemy here. There’s a lot of new talent coming into the town and a lot of talent which is very advanced. We’re providing a great place to work but also a great place to live, and Leamington offers that. We’ve got one of the largest creative clusters outside of Greater London. Creative industries across Warwickshire contribute over a billion pounds in GVA to the local economy. The video game industry has been a catalyst for other creative businesses wanting to join the local ecosystem.

We have a concentration of different sectors, from the video games cluster, film and TV, creative technology, advertising, and marketing agencies. What makes the ecosystem here so unique is the amount of partners that come together to support industry. We collaborate together to work on key issues that are facing the industry, things like mental well-being, the environment, and the skills shortages.

We were aware that Warwick University wanted to create an incubator for startup companies, one that was off-campus. We thought we were a perfect fit for that. The standout elements between this partnership have been the level of collaboration that’s taken place. We’ve built a creative industries network and also an incubator for new businesses, and the University of Warwick has worked with them all through the Creative Futures program.

Setting up a business can be quite a challenge, and Creative Futures really helps bring Warwick University into the community and support businesses like us. It has really helped me to distill that directorial mindset and has helped me gain much more confidence in order to grow. They’ve given us support and offered us a community to work within. We’ve expanded our network and collaborated with a vast range of partners.

Creative Futures has broken some invaluable relationships for Lab 42, and it’s helped Lab 42 become a more accessible and inclusive studio. They have come to us with idea after idea, and it’s been a really great relationship for us to be involved in. We’ve had tours of spaces, residencies, placements, and guest speakers coming in. The networking opportunities for students are just fantastic.

Access to M Street has given us an opportunity to bring in and work with students from the University. We’ve had media and creative industries students working with us on research and development. We have had a fantastic intern who was great, and we’re not having to tell them much. They know the technical ability that comes from the university; we’re more coaching them on how to bring that into the workplace.

It was like a completely different experience from other work experiences that I’ve done in the past. They were really good at involving me in live projects. I could work collaboratively, and I think I have much more confidence when I am producing work. We’re really excited to build on the work that we’ve done and raise the profile of this creative cluster in Leamington Spa and the wider area.

Hi, I’m Katie and I’m a graphic designer and motion designer. What I really love about graphic design is that it allows me to be creative in everything that I do. Creative Futures has asked me to create their new visual identity, and today I’m going to be taking you through the steps of how I create.

Now I’m just copying the circles.
The next thing that I would do is take this into Illustrator.

The logo is really nice. I really like the swirly emblem that we’ve got, and adding the dots to it is going to be really cool. It’s going to add a lot of energy too.

That Creative Futures incubator for me was a massive impact on my business. I was starting basically from scratch, and I had not very much business knowledge. So coming onto the incubator gave me so much knowledge to fall back on and be able to make my business work a lot more professionally. But it also gave me the community that I needed to be able to get up every morning, keep me motivated, keep me going, and that’s exactly what I get from it.

So we know that we want these dots to come in off the screen and move around, have a bit of energy, come around the space, and then land where they…

Are. I always try to bring a bit of a pop and a flare, and a bit of motion just to get things moving and looking really cool. All the dots come into place and represent all the different aspects of the Creative Futures project in a really nice way that encapsulates all the energy and creativity around what they do and who they are.

If you want to see more of my work or get in touch with me, you can follow me on Instagram at Katy Joneses, or you can check out my website, which is designbykatyjones.com.
