Accessibility statement

Warwick Innovation District (WID) is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This accessibility statement applies to the content under the *warwickinnovationdistrict.com website domain.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliance and the exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

(a) non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Pagination

Results pages on the website for search results, blog articles and news articles all have pagination that allows a user to click through to multiple results pages that contain blocks of content that link to other pages across the website. The pagination we use may not have enough context for a non-sighted user to understand clearly or contextually what the numbered hyperlinks are for. Currently, the pagination reads as ‘1, link’, ‘2, link’, ‘Next, link’ etc. This may not provide enough context for non-sighted users. Due to the way in which this page is coded, we are not currently able to label these links more clearly until we are able to find a solution. Filters on the results pages should allow a user to refine their search enough so not to need to use the pagination as an accessible alternative to tabbing through the pagination until they find the content on the results page that they need.

2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context)

(b) disproportionate burden

Video content

Some pre-recorded audio and video content is not accompanied by a text alternative, captions or audio description. This fails the following WCAG 2.2 Level AA success criteria:

1.1.1 Non-text Content

1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded)

1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded)

1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded)

Pre-recorded audio and video content created after 23 September 2020 may not currently have Audio Descriptions but do all have transcripts and captions available. All future videos will be created with audio descriptions, transcripts and captions so to provide a full breadth of Audio and Visual Media text and non-text alternatives. All pre-recorded audio and video content that currently are not accessible need to be retrospectively improved. After performing an assessment on our ability to fix these issues, we have deemed that the improvements to these existing videos, which do not currently have audio descriptions, fall under disproportionate burden. We endeavour to make sure all videos created after September 2020 have all the appropriate Audio and Visual Media text and non-text alternatives within the next 12 months to give us time to gather the resources we need to provide audio descriptions. These videos fall under a disproportionate burden until we are able to make the changes; which we have set a timeline for, for when that will be possible to provide.

Please contact innovate@warwick.ac.uk if you require an accessible alternative for any videos which currently fall under disproportionate burden.

(c) the content is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Pre-recorded audio and video content published before 23 September 2020 is unlikely to be accompanied by a text alternative, captions or audio description. We do not plan to add these things because this content is also exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

During the creation of the WID website, all page types have been templated and all content blocks used have also been standardised. We employed Warwick Employment Group (WEG) to conduct manual and automated testing on the accessibility of all our page templates and any specific content blocks that were not page template specific to ensure that all existing pages and all future pages are standardised and accessible. We went through two rounds of accessibility testing with WEG in which we took the time to make as many accessibility and usability improvements as we could so that when WEG re-tested the Warwick Innovation District (WID) website we were able to pass WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility compliance.

Internally, we have also created a governance and training document that all website editors must follow to ensure our templates and standardised content blocks are used appropriately, so not to inadvertently make any of them inaccessible.

For any content that is currently inaccessible, we will endeavour to keep to specified timelines to find solutions, working with Avada theme developers and WID web editors to help us to achieve this goal.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 1st May 2025.

The method used to prepare the statement was via a third party (Warwick Employment Group) who conducted manual and automated testing on selected aspects of the new Warwick Innovation District website twice; once for the initial assessment and then once again after revisions had been made.

The statement was last reviewed on 1st May 2025.

For all future accessibility revisions, accessibility will be reviewed ‘in-house’ annually to ensure all elements of the Warwick Innovation District Website will be compliant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA . We will achieve this by using automated and manual accessibility checkers for any/all new elements created for website and an annual governance check to ensure all webpages are compliant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA by enforcing governance that editors of the website can only utilise templated blocks of content that have been preformatted to be accessible. No other blocks should be used on the website without further accessibility testing.
