Using personality and technology to improve online tuition.

Introduction

As the latest cohort on the DeepTech Incubator moves into the final few weeks, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our fast growing start-ups, TutorHive.

The Deep Tech incubator supports start-ups from anywhere in the country at any stage of their development, so it’s great to see a Warwick Alumnus coming back here to join us. Rushab Shah has been a much valued participant in the programme, actively supporting the other members and getting involved with everything we are doing here, and I know he would agree that being part of this cohort has been very worthwhile.

What is the best advice you would give to students and startups? Watch the conversation with Rushab here…

Managed to scale it to six figures. Hey, my name is Rashab, an engineering student from here at Warwick University, and as an engineer, there’s a lot more to going and doing the engineering. There’s the whole business element that piqued my interest. I actually started my first vintage clothing company, managed to scale it to six figures, and we’re actually now in a completely different sector building an education tech startup that’s going to change the world. We’re thinking about putting you as a learner in the middle to own your learning journey.

We’ve worked it out. We’ve got backing from Microsoft, IBM, and we’re rolling out for a couple of banks. So the biggest advice for students is going to be: go get some experience, go and be vulnerable, go and ask people, do your work for free. See what that’s going to lead to — incredible opportunities down the line and something that you can put your name to.

EdTech startup, TutorHive, has built an online tuition platform that improves student engagement using a personality-matching algorithm.

With the funding for schools decreasing by £1.5billion, over half of students admit to being disengaged at school. Engagement is measured through a student’s academic performance, but also their consolidation and retention of knowledge, enjoyment of lessons and their autonomy of learning.

3.3 million students in the UK are turning to tuition to help with their education. The rise in online tuition has improved access to extra-curricular learning, but the industry remains stagnant having simply moved in-person practices to a website.

TutorHive has built a platform that revolutionises the tuition industry by placing students at the heart of their tuition journey. As part of the onboarding process, students enter their hobbies and interests to create a personality profile. Using TutorHive’s AI powered Hive-Matching Algorithm, students are matched with tutors with a similar personality, shown to increase engagement.

Parent Shanthy Tharumarajah said her child’s GCSE grades had improved from a 4 to an 8. “My child improved her GCSEs tremendously with the help of TutorHive. They tailored the lessons for her and were always there to help with all her doubts. Highly recommend!”

Whilst at Warwick, I ran Warwick Youth Phab, a youth club for children with disabilities, and I witnessed how aligning children with like-minded volunteers brought out the best in them. We used this concept to build the TutorHive platform and Algorithm, and now boast a 93% first-time match rate, and 86% student retention rate.
