Location

West Midlands

There are two ways in which having the conversation here at South by Southwest in London is really important.

The first is that it lets people in London see that this is happening in the West Midlands. It’s not happening in London. Everything doesn’t have to happen in London. In fact, it’s taking place in the West Midlands, in Liverpool, in Belfast, and in Scotland.

That’s going to add to an overall ecosystem, which will eventually benefit London too.

The reason it was important for CreaTech is so they don’t get complacent. They realise what they have to do. They understand what the problems are. They see that this is the start of a journey, not the end.

Just because they’ve received funding and been launched, this is when the real hard work begins.

It also gives them a chance to liaise with others who can advise them on what needs to be done and how they might go about doing it.

The panel for today’s session on CreaTech was focused on exploring why it’s important that the West Midlands has been given a creative industries cluster.

We looked at the challenges facing the arts.
We looked at the challenges facing the creative industries.
We also considered the challenges facing the region, socially, culturally, and economically.

We explored why these clusters, driven by universities in the region, are capable of addressing some of these issues.

Successful collaboration, networking, and mutual support, whether it’s companies, artists, organisations, universities or colleges, is essential.

We all want the same thing: a future for the region.

So we need to look at who can best deliver each part of that and bring them together under a forward-facing agenda.

Funding

Grants of £5,000 to £10,000 are now available to apply for, to help businesses and freelancers in the West Midlands to develop and accelerate creative technologies.

Successful applicants will receive funding and access to academic expertise, specialist labs and facilities provided by the consortium partners. The grants will support innovation in areas such as immersive experiences, gaming, live performance, enabling technologies, visual and digital arts and creative technology research.
