What is the HealthTech Innovation Accelerator?

First announced in the Government’s 2022 Levelling up White Paper, the West Midlands Innovation Accelerator commenced in May 2023, funded through a share of a £100m fund from Innovate UK

One of the three regional Innovation Accelerators is the West Midlands Health Tech Innovation Accelerator (WMHTIA). This is a collaborative network of expertise covering industry, NHS and universities that helps businesses navigate the key stages of medical translation, tackling the challenges companies face in bringing new technologies to the market.

The aims

  • Accelerating the region’s engineering research & development
  • Boosting inward investment
  • Reinforcing the West Midlands’ position at the frontier of the UK innovation revolution by enabling businesses to develop new products, processes and services.

The opportunity

WMHTIA will provide:

  • proof of concept funding
  • technology development expertise
  • direct access to healthcare markets and investors
  • sector specific seminars
  • networking opportunities

The WMHTIA will also be providing prototype funding for innovators to meet the specific requirements of local NHS organisations through the WMHWIN Innovation Challenge Programme.
