WMHWIN, in partnership with DHU Healthcare, is launching a challenge-led innovation programme focused on improving urgent and emergency care communications and reducing health inequalities such as language barriers in healthcare.

This programme offers innovators the opportunity to work directly with operational and clinical teams to co-develop, test and evaluate scalable solutions within a live healthcare environment.

The challenges faced by DHU Healthcare are reflected across urgent and emergency care systems nationwide. The programme is seeking innovative technologies that can help patients access the right information, in the right language, at the right time, while reducing demand on frontline services and improving patient experience.

The key challenge area we are looking for technologies in are:

  • Reducing language barriers in healthcare and health inequalities through intelligent communication solutions.

We are seeking technologies that improve language accessibility, cultural competence and personalised communication for diverse patient populations. Solutions should integrate effectively with existing healthcare workflows and support high-volume urgent care environments across multiple languages.

Applicants must be:

  • SMEs (UK-registered businesses preferred)
  • Developing technology relevant to the challenge
  • Willing and able to commit to workshops and co-design activity
  • Open to codesign with NHS staff and iterate quickly
  • Able to work within NHS data-governance constraints
  • Have technologies that help reduce language barriers and health inequalities through intelligent communication solutions.

Supported by Warwick University’s West Midlands Health & Wellbeing Innovation Network, participants will gain access to expert innovation support, healthcare stakeholders, and a structured programme designed to accelerate adoption and real-world impact.
