CryoLogyx makes assay-ready pre-plated cells for use in biotech, R&D, and drug screening.

In terms of improvement from a technological perspective—if you cryopreserve cells in plates now, your recovery is around 10%. But with CryoLogyx assay-ready plates, the recovery is in the mid to high 90% range in terms of cell recovery and viability.

What that actually translates to in real-world benefits for customers is a tenfold reduction in the amount of prep work required. Instead of several days, you only need several hours. Instead of several hours of actual hands-on time preparing the cells, it’s literally a minute or less of work.

There are also significant reductions in the amount of plastic waste generated. We estimate up to an 86% reduction in the amount of single-use plastic used to run an experiment with our products compared to conventional cell culture methods.

We’ve completed two rounds of investment now—both have been really positive experiences that have helped us grow the company, not just in terms of funding but also in skills and experience.

CryoLogyx is now at the stage where we’re starting to move products out to customers. Over the summer, we built this lab—a pilot manufacturing lab—where the focus is less on research and more on product development and manufacturing.

Advice to my past self from a couple of years ago? Focus more on the product and get it out there faster. Don’t worry about making something super perfect—make it as good as possible and get it in front of people. Get feedback early and don’t be afraid to push for that feedback. That’s the best way to make something really good, fast.

My first touchpoint for commercializing this was through the ICURe Program at Warwick. We applied to join the program with our idea for assay-ready adherent plates, got accepted, and did a three-month customer discovery program. We talked to industry leaders, CEOs, commercial scientists at large institutions, and start-ups worldwide to get commercial feedback on our idea.

We then presented our findings to a team of investors and got the go-ahead to apply for Innovate UK funding, which helped kickstart the company.

Warwick Innovations has been a fantastic support partner in launching the company. They helped us raise our initial funding, set up the legal structure, and safeguarded our intellectual property. But beyond that, they’ve also provided crucial guidance on things you don’t necessarily think about when you’re focused on product development—legal matters, company structure, running board meetings, and cash flow forecasting.

Warwick Innovations has been a great partner in building the foundations of our business.
