I’m Joe, I’m the CEO and one of the founders of NanoSyrinx, which is a company spinning out, which has spun out in fact from Warwick Medical School.

The company is built around technology that I was developing during my PhD with my co-founders and my then supervisor Nick Waterfield, where we’re taking what is essentially a virulence factor, a toxin system of bacteria and developing that for applications in biologic drug delivery.

How did the ICURe programme support?

So we did ICURe, or I did ICURe in 2018 – for us really it was just about understanding whether what we thought the technology was useful for really was. It was nice in a way that we kind of came in with one idea, robustly tested it, spoke to anyone, anyone who would listen, potential investors, customers, partners, suppliers, you name it, to really hammer home that this IS a problem worth trying to solve and that we know where we’re going to make it happen.

What’s next for NanoSyrinx?

The big litmus test for the technology now is going to be, us going into our Invivo work – so really starting to see whether all the platform development work that we’ve done holds water, and that the system has has legs, as a real therapeutic modality.

What advise would you give to other start-ups?

Talk to anyone who’ll listen, take even a sort of nascent idea and run with it. I mean we had little to no data to speak of when this started, we had an idea that we thought was solving a real challenge and it was ICURe that helped us prove that, but I think it’s very easy to talk yourself out of, this won’t work for reasons X Y and Z, or no one’s really going to care, or I don’t know if this is a real problem.

Taking an idea seriously and speaking to the right people has to be step one.
